there was a boy
a strange enchanted lonely boy
who lies over the ocean
in stark land of rocks and mountains
he walks across pebbled stones
to the cold sea collecting driftwood
whittles and fashions it into intricate
gems hanging in his small den
the private world to which he withdraws
he listens to the pounding waves
through the cowrie shell he once found
pressing a piece of ancient wood from
a viking wreck to his lips still tasting of salt
sometimes he hears her talking to him on the wind
messages delivered to him through the gale
making his heart race, telling him of things
that he does and does not want to hear
He sits in the sun
ReplyDeleteThe sea sings of secrets past
Sighs of things to come
Buddhists, Druids, Picts, child sacrifice
And Ninian, Hwit ærn and Finnian of Moville
Of fire and water
Over the Cities of the Plaines
Where they feed on strange flesh
Where kindness from virgins is eaten by bees
Where innocence is murdered
He looks into a pebble
Holds ash and elm
Washed ashore
Brought by wind, tide and wave
He sleeps in the sun
And all these beautiful words from someone who
Deleteclaims not to be a poet but is one!
" Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly light, who does not change like shifting
shadows." James 1:17
This is a very wonderful tale. I see it and hear it like it could be mine. Great story telling along with so much knowing awareness of the heart's solitudes and longings.
ReplyDeleteThank you Charles. It could be yours.
DeleteQuiet and watchful
ReplyDeleteEyesight awry
Hearing dulled
He pieced the world together
His way
No one noticed
Thought him ‘backward’
He listened beneath words
Understood more than they said
Watched unspoken language
Always questioned
Rarely answered
People noticed
Thought him ‘withdrawn’
One friend
Who understood
Sat him on his lap and laughed
Put his arm around him and promised always to be there
Asked him to serve Him
He kept him in the garden
Refused to permit the kiss
Stayed at his side
Holding his hand
Put his arm on his back and promised to be there
Begged him to stay
Then
Walking with him
He left
A lift
A black car
A gray wraith
A suffocating darkness
He opened the garden gate
Watched it all
Witnessed
Heard his words
Saw all that happened
Stood at the foot of the tree
Turned his back
Walked away
They both knew he would return
One day
