the weathered boat so near its journey's end
having survived all the storms
would be risking too much to enter the bay
no point in waving
no - one can see you
jagged rocks and reefs
make it too dangerous to enter
the tide still rolls in
as the cold wind whips up a yellow froth
slamming the shore in sad rhythmical fury
the boat slowly disappears over the horizon
trailing the last shred of hope in its wake
the sun will shine again tomorrow
the sea will turn dark blue and green
the gulls will skim the tops of the waves
things will be as before
very ship-wrecked feeling there, Cressida
ReplyDeletei have a bit of the feel of being lost on the island and finally seeing hope only to watch it reach for the horizon instead of you...which makes me a bit sad...
ReplyDeleteOooh, this is bleak... and the world doesn't care, things will rumble on as per usual. A chilling evocation!
ReplyDeleteThis poem saddened me. The boat had come all that distance and then could not make it to shore...life doesn't always have a happy ending, and so much is just lost at sea.
ReplyDeleteAn effective way of conveying that sad feel! Life can sometimes be cruel. Nicely Cressida!

Feels like a "goodbye". Some boats just belong to the sea.
