Simple, simply beautiful tribute. Thanks. I had one published in a recent Holocaust Remembrance Anthology. If interested, you can find it here: http://eggsovertokyo.blogspot.com/2012/04/whither-thou-goest.html
A Catholic priest who provided shelter to over 2000 Jews whom he hid from Nazi persecution. In February 1941, he was imprisoned and in May transferred to Auschwitz.
In July 1941, 10 men were picked to be starved to death in an underground bunker. When one of the selected men, Franciszek Gajowniczek, cried out, "My wife! My children!", Kolbe volunteered to take his place. After two weeks of dehydration and starvation, only Kolbe remained alive. The guards wanted the bunker emptied and they gave him a lethal injection of carbolic acid.
Fr Kolbe was a Catholic priest.Jews were not the only ones murdered in the holocaust.
