she tried so hard
to muffle the sounds
drowning it out
for years with appointments
and busyness
a busyness that only
the middle class can
conjure up with its self importance
frantic frantic frantic
until she saw the red coral
on the sand bed
on a lovely summers day
it was quiet under the water
and she remembered
a flood of happiness
far away and too long ago
she remembered and realised
how far she had been swept out
from herself and how she
barely noticed the sea urchins anymore
pleasing pleasing pleasing
everyone
living up to expectations
the scales thickened over her eyes
she had to go back
smell the incense and cloves
once again listen
to the wail of the monsoon
the tinkling of the ceremony
and see
see how much it had been ruined
destroyed by the advance of
the coca cola monster
it had been ruined alright
as everyone said
but she loved it as much
as she had all those years ago
she could still see
see glimmers
of its former wonder
that had escaped the onslaught
it fitted her like a kid glove
so comfortable so familiar
her soul had been trapped
in the penjors flowing in the breeze
waiting for her return
coke and gucci...will def get in the way...and pleasing everyone for sure...everyone has expectations of us...especially ourselves...we often can not see beyond...
ReplyDeleteI edit a lot once a poem is published not realising that followers get the original...must do something about that.

on a lovely summers day...and in the quietness remembering... good when certain things get us back to the core again...we can lose ourselves easily in the everyday..
