Syria

dverse 55

its hard to believe
that this is someone's home

someone who liked nice things

never counted on
having a terrorist
standing on their bed linen
in filthy boots

shooting
at the 40 nuns and orphans
across the road

not that it matters much
they are only Christians
who gives a shit

didn't even make the news

  2. I've sat here for far too long wondering what to write in this comment box. Images flashing through my head… this is all too real. Your words are powerful.

  3. A hard-edged slice of life that is too true for the 'news'. I like what you have written and the way you have written it.

  6. Keeping the truth out is important. Sorry for the victims. The news is infamous for mass distraction and just plain laziness, mostly bias towards narcissisms of the entertainment world, and non faith agendas. I love the way you have written this story.

  7. what does not make the news...
i have absolutely no faith in the news
this is a hard slice of reality---even beyond the actions
    to attitudes---the minimalization of people

  8. So much of what is very important / relevant does not make the news. You point out this fact very clearly in your well written piece.

  9. Christian nuns caring for orphans in the middle of a civil war. Captured by Islamists who could rape, torture and behead them at any moment. News? And, of course, the *religion of peace*regards children taken in such circumstances as slaves, including sexual slaves. News?

As someone commented on the Farm, if these were lesbians the world media would be on it like a shot and dear, sweet, Stephen Fry would be crying in the streets and all over Twitter and organising protests.

But no, these are just Christian nuns, reverently worshipping God and caring for innocent children. Why publish this?

  10. News is notoriously selective.. Though reporting from Syria is also extremely dangerous ... Kidnapped or jailed journalists - the first sacrifice is truth.

  11. Wow. What a powerful photograph, with its contrast of opulence and violence. And your poem a comparable commentary on the piece.
