Proustian Tinkles
when I hear
this tinkling
I think of you
little lovely
i think
of winter nights
of those cold hands
fingerless mittens
of mangy fur coats
of frosty pink cheeks
warmed by the
green wood embers
from the fireplace
when the road
was so far ahead
beyond the horizon
i can still see
that diligent little girl
in firelight glow
alone
tackling the world
determined
working ferociously
to be what she should
until it became clear
to her
that she needed
none of those things
that she should not be
what she was supposed to be
that she should follow
another rainbow
unremarkable but one
that might bring her
some joy
without fear

Joy without fear... That's a goal worth seeking. The choices we face are rarely so clearly apparent. I think you're right to sing her praises for such self-awareness to see the choice and follow the right path.
ReplyDeleteI like your use of color early, and some really nice descriptions of coldness in the same stanza. the word diligent just isn't used enough, it's a great word, as is ferocious. Nice write, yes joy without fear, that certainly would be idea. Thanks
